''Our School, Our S^ip^'

by Hannah Blanchard

Pi crowded ship awaits departure,

!A gcdiery of faces ready to leave the harbor.

On this raft for twelve years

We've had our memories) we've cried our tears.

Constantly lectured, yet constantly trying.

To (earn the knowledge and leave the island.

Amusing how we've come so far,

Jet we stUl do not know who we really arc.

!A group of individuals separated by friends

finally working to reach the end.

Our time's expired', we've had our share.

Of our mentors' cordial care.

^Held close together by the past,

Surely this day has come too fast.

Ifte waves have plummeted and altered our boat,

yet as a whole, we've stayed afloat.

At last the end, time to say good-bye,

9{gw spread your wings and start to fly.

for our ship will remain for years to come,
yet we will go on, separate, one by one.
individual journeys accompanied by fear.

Open your hearts, and you will hear

^Ihe )oys and spirits of your oldest friends.

Cheering you on, for dreams never end.

'hese years are floating from our memories
Simple pages read, turned, and forgotten.
Hidden somewhere in our sleeping minds
or in the pictures that stain our walls.
The exact moment when we learned to walk
is misplaced, lost beneath the dust of time,
hut we will always place its face:
(oceans of crimson fields and sensitive trees)
Here, under a blanket of vermilion leaves
and the colors that woke us each morning,
we learned first to crawl and
now to walk away.
We have let go of the hands that
have cradled us for so long.
And with incredible strength and support
we leave their shelter behind.
Falling into an uncertainty,
greater than our narrow eyes can comprehend,
we enter a world we couldn't ever know.
Our fragile existence is finally cracked.
With shakey hands we rebuilt it,
painting it with the colors of our memories.
Spinning our dreams to consciousness

Bree A. Rolfe

We the class of 1994, are all individuals who are proud of our accom-
plishments yet are still striving for our own identities. Confident and ready to
step out into the world, a brand new world, we've only just begun to com-
prehend. So many roads to take and so many paths to follow this is where we
begin the rest of our lives.

This year the class of 1994 would like to dedicate our yearbook to HAR-
MONY, a cause that many of us take for granted.

Take a few moments, or spend the rest of your lives if you wish, searching
for the answers, for these answers are the keys to life's successes.

Do not let yourself be a victim of an uneducated world; teach each other to
accept the DIFFERENCES.

Fight the spread of prejudice and violence; preconceived notions are some-
times empty, but at times they're filled with HATE.

Take the time to care for our environment; we are not the only ones who
must LIVE in it.

Appreciate your mind and body; you are the ones in CONTROL of it. J

Don't let society whisk you by; HARMONIZE!

it's not man or materialistic for that matter, it's
partly an action, a little bit of emotion,
and a kind of idea all in one.

it's perspective.

our perspective.

the way we see things, or the way we want them
to be or was or is or could be.

perspective is expression of soul, of mind, it is

one of the things that we possess that is
totally ours and always will be.

this yearbook celebrates the class of 94's distinct
perspective of the world, of us.

we don't want to just live the world, we want to
be the world.

Administration

To the Class of 1994,

You are exceptional students! You have helped each
other reach this plateau of success, accomplishment,
and joy. You each took the time and interest to en-
courage each other to succeed in the classroom and in
all extra-curricula activities. Your talents are numerous
— develop them, polish them, and use them to improve
yourself and our quality of life.

Your generosity and sincerity will provide even great-
er pride and dedication to all future classes.

Thank you for keeping your "Commitment to Ex-
cellence."

Thank you for your commitment to Carver High School and I
wish you well with your future plans.

Yearbook Message

1

To the Class of 1994,

You are the first graduating class to have spent sLx full years ag
students at Carver High School. Your contributions to the school in
establishing traditions, providing examples for the younger students,
and in the areas of sports and academics, have been significant.

Thank you for what you have done for Carv'cr High School. I wani
to wish each of you success and happiness in your future.

Dan Daly

Superintendent

\Mien I reflect on the Class of 1994 my thoughts go to September of
1988. On a fall day, you made the transition from elementaiy school to
your first day at Car\'er High School. On that same fall day in September
of 1988. I began my first day as Superintendent of Schools in Carver.

We have accomplished much over our sLx-year journey. We look with
pride to our successes, and we remember, with some disappointment,
our failures, but most of all, we remember that we have grown as
individuals and we have learned as much from our failures as we have
from our successes. We have learned that life is a continual learning
process, and that we will always treasure the gift of life-long learning.

You are my first graduating class as Car\^er"s first pre-school through
grade twelve Superintendent. I will always have a very special feeling
for the Class of 1994. I congratulate you for your hard work and wish
vou much success.

THE CRUSADER

I WISH YOU A MERRY TURKEY

A Column by Greg Johnson

On September 25, 1993, Filene's
began construction on their Christmas
display. Trees, ornaments, lights,
cards, garlands, and dolls were put
into place. On October 18, 1993, they
began to play Christmas carols.

Beheve it or not, the hoUday shop-
ping season had begun — three
months early. Moreover, it's not only
the major shopping hoUdays of De-
cember that have received early and
extensive attention. Halloween gets its
fair share of advance coverage, too.
Pumpkin heads and witch-faced win-
dow candles, mini-decorative Hallow-
een trees and ornaments, paper-
pumpkin garlands, smash-proof plas-
tic pumpkins . . . anything remotely
related to the "spirit" of a holiday is
displayed weeks and weeks before the
holiday and bought by gullible shop-

Holiday over-kill has been stimu-
lated by the greeting card industry. As
if Valentine's Day cards aren't enough,
we now must deal with cards for
Thanksgiving, Halloween, St. Patrick's
Day — what's next, a greeting card
for Columbus Day? Or, how about Ar-
bor Day?

I don't think anybody wants to hear
"White Christmas" two weeks before
Halloween, so why do stores shove
their rendition of the holiday spirit
down our throats? It's disgusting to
see how retailers try to peiTert the
calendar in order to highlight at least
one shopper hoHday monthly — that
is a holiday where festive stuff can be
sold to celebrate it. They attempt to
make people think that they have to
buy a certain holiday spirit. For ex-

ample, you will be very thankful k
what you have on Thanksgiving if yo
buy a cardboard "Indian" cutout, c
you will truly be loved if someon
buys you a stuffed heart on Valentine'
Day, or you will be exceptionally pj
triotic if you buy a little plastic flag o
the Fourth of July — it's pathetic.

Can't you just imagine it, a hundre
years from now, children will hang u
stockings and wait for Timothy Turke
(the spirit of Thanksgiving) to deUve
all their presents. My nightmare an
the retailer's dream — screaming
bratty kids waiting in line to sit in th
lap of a guy in an over-stuffed turke
suit.

Nobody seems to remember th
meaning of "the hohday spirit.'' 1
should be celebrating the time yo
have with your loved ones, not meai
uring how much someone loves yo
by the price tag on a gift or how muc
candy you get. Whatever happened t
the message, "Peace on earth an
good will toward men?" I beheve
has been changed to "Will that be cas
or charge?"

CARVER: THE ATHENS OF
MASSACHUSETTS

A Column by Bree Rolfe

Caner. A quaint town, nestled snugly on the south shore of
assachusetts. is famous for its vividly colored and sour-tasting
rries. But there's more to Caner than cranberries. It's a town
•ipping with culture. Now. I have lived in this town for well over a
cade, but in that time I have never grown to appreciate it, so I was
termined to find out its mysterious charm, so one day Randy
)uza and I set out to capture the soul of Caner.
Our first venture was to Shaw's supermarket. At first, it may seem
;e a mere supermarket: but oh no. Shaw's is a cultural hot spring.
s bursting with the flavor of Can-er. Shaw's sen-es as a meeting
ound for the townspeople to exchange information about their
rious friends and neighbors. Ethnic foods, like frozen burritos and
nned spaghetti, are widely accessible. And don't overlook the
ilightening reading materials available at even" cashier's. I mean,
lere else can you find that many copies of the National En-
lirer?

Our next stop was Tiki Kye. the Chinese restaurant down the
■eet. Tiki Kye possesses a distinct atmosphere similar to a sym-
lony hall's. My partner and I were delighted to receive a table at
ch a hopping place. \\e were even more delighted to dine on
isine we could barely recognize as edible. (Now that's culture.)
Throughout our extensive journey into the heart of Can-er. we
?nt to all the numerous pizza shops. We discovered that, overall,
ey were about the same although some were bilingual which was
I added treat. We preferred the ones with languages other than
iglish. but ones with hea\T accents were also rated highly. As for
e food, well we didn't tiy any, but who cares! They sound cool
len they take your order (and if you're lucky you may get what

.\long with the plethora of pizzerias. Caner has its share of fine
m-rental senices. We only went to the two most popular ones:
dless Mdeo and Mac's Movies. Both had a variety of films.
eluding classics like The Search for the Holy Grail and Saturday
ght Fever, but Mac's had a far superior candy selection. However,
dless has moved into the twentieth centuiy with computers. (Yes.
' were impressed too. )

Next stop were the donut shops. Both were completely sfimu-
ing. The philosophical discussions blew my mind. In fact, we had
leave we felt so inferior. Aside for the conversations, they both
d a variety of colorful and creative snacks. However. Honey Dew's
mied portraits of muffins and something called a Big Bear, made it
jch more creative. Both seemed to have their radios locked on the
rly 80's soft rock station. In my opinion, this is a "must" for a
nut shop to be culturally adequate.

Well, our journey came to a reluctant close when we visited the
0 Cumberland Farms. (Cumberlands h2^^•e always been a cultural
thering center for the youths of Caner. In fact, their parking lots
ve often been compared to the market place in ancient Greece
lere young scholars went to converse and philosophize with the
isters like Plato and Socrates. ) The Cumberland's in the center of
\\n senes as the gathering place for the pre-teen crowd. \'ou can
d them amidst a cloud of smoke and teased hair, sitting on their
:\cles. contemplafing the meaning of life. The other Cumberland's
nes as the meeting place for the older crowd. There they sit on
eir cars in a cloud of smoke, discussing more sophisticated topics
ch as the ingredients of beef jerky or how they get the cream
ling inside of Twinkies.

Alas, our journey finally came to an end with the close of the day.
e both now understand that Can-er has a soul that runs deeper
an the bogs that surround it. It is a town with character and
ttlligence. Yes, Can'er could easily be referred to as the Athens of
issachusetts.

WHAT TO WEAR

A Column by Christian Lownds

What to wear, what to wear? For some, this is one of the first things
we think of as the morning robs us of our sleep. With increasing
frequenc}-. though, schools are trying to take that answer out of our
hands and put it into theirs. School uniforms are gaining growing
popularity across the country, not only at private schools but at public
schools as well. At schools where students are not made to wear
uniforms (which, incidentally are almost always chosen by the ad-
ministration with little or no input from the youth who will be forced to
wear them), there is usually some sort of archaic, sexist dress code that
was devised by an administration that grew up during the forties and
fifties, and for the most part, does not have its finger on the pulse of our
sub-culture.

Dress codes in schools became a major issue during the late eighties
when there was a sharp increase in the number of gangs across the
countn and a drastic increase in the number of children bringing
weapons to school. In order to remedy these problems, some schools
began to ban the over-sized Starter jackets, colors commonly associated
with gangs, and certain sports-team logos and clothing. Other schools,
despite nearly non-existent gang activity, hopped on the dress-code
bandwagon and toughened up codes that had been more than adequate
for the schools in the past.

While the need for dress codes can be justified by saying that they are
created in the interest of public safety, that baggy clothes are easier to
hide weapons in, that wearing gang colors promotes gang violence, etc..
in schools where these concerns are not an issue, these arguments are
in\'alid: and the questions of personal freedom is raised. What about the
students' sense of indi\-iduality and identity? What about the students'
freedom to choose what they will wear and when?

In some schools, the dress code has been designed to forbid only
certain articles of clothing and in doing so to create a dress code that is
actually sexist. Some schools' dress codes forbid only articles of clothing
that are worn by females, items such as halter tops and rings. Others
have codes that forbid things such as hats and Starter jackets, items
traditionally worn primarily by males. In many of these schools,
students have called in the A.C.L.U. to challenge the dress codes and
ha\'e won.

So, while the dress code may be a necessary measure against student
violence in some schools, in other schools the measures are being taken
to an unnecessary extreme. In still others, certain aspects of the dress
code seem to have been brought about for no intelligible reason, and
even the schools' administrators can not explain why the codes prohibit
wearing some types of clothing (or maybe they just do not want to
explain).

Why do we have certain dress restrictions here in Caner High? Wliy
can't we wear hats, and why are some accessories counted as dangerous
weapons? How much of this is a carry-o\er from our years as part of a
regional school system where what was necessary in one school had to
be handled the same in all schools? Furthermore, why are the CHS
restrictions only enforced for certain members of the population? Is
there a real need for restrictions? It just seems common sense that in a
school where violence is not a problem, the administration should
concentrate on the areas that are problems and forget the hats, etc.

Dear Seniors.

The high quality of this book is a result of your creativity and strong
work ethic. The memories of your time together live on these pages. These
are golden memories. As Chris said in "Stand by Me."' "I don't think I've
ever had friends like the ones I had when I was 1 2." The pictures and words
on these pages are an indelible reminder of your friendships, your best
moments, and your hopes and dreams.

You've dedicated these pages to Harmony in hopes that we will someday
be a part of a global community that will transcend humankind's artificial
boundaries. If all of today's youth are as fine, as tolerant, as open-minded
as are you. we will indeed have a chance to realize this vision.

Love is what is needed. Life is filled with questions and uncertainty, but
of one thing I am sure: Love is all that matters. Go in peace.
Love Always.
.Mrs. Simeone

The junior class has showed exceptional spirit and unity in all
they set their minds to. This is shown in their hard work and
dedication during spirit week in attempt of breaking the
seniors tradition of winning the much desired accolades.
Although in the mind of the judges they lost, in the mind of
the student body they may have arguably broken this tra-
dition. This is proof that the junior class is capable of
anything they set their minds to. The class of 95 ran the
traditional can drive during the holiday season and was very
successful. x\lso, during Valentines Day, they sold carnations
and roses in their attempt of raising funds. For the spring
season, they are hard at work for the much anticipated junior-
senior prom. Their challenge this year: to put on a prom
without many of the seniors due to Grad Nite, a challenge that
will be no problem for the juniors. They have shown that they
are ready for the greatest challenge of all, becoming seniors.

GREGORY SHANE
JOHNSON

Class of 1994

Greg:

Where have all the years gone? It seems like only yesterday you were beginning your school years, and today

you are standing on the threshold of all your tomorrows.

During the past 18 years, we have watched you grow from a beautiful, good-natured, loveable baby into a
handsome, caring, loving young man. We have laughed with you and cried with you, shared your pleasures
and your pain and taken great pride in the wonderful person you have become. You are open-minded and
unprejudiced, never judgmental and always fair. You are an intelligent, creative thinker, wise beyond your
years, and you never cease to amaze us with your insight. These are remarkable qualities that will enrich your
life and the lives of all those around you.

Graduation is a major milestone in your life, but it is just the first step of the wondrous journey you are about
to begin. The college years ahead promise to be exciting and challenging ones — meet each new challenge
head-on with confidence, optimism and enthusiasm. Dare to take risks, reach for the stars and make your
dreams reality. Always remember that there are no time-outs in the game of life; the clock never stops ticking,
and there is no time for procrastination. Live each moment to the fullest and make every day count.

Thank you for all the sunshine and joy you have brought into our lives. Your wit and wonderful sense of
humor have given us miles of smiles, and your caring, sensitive, unselfish nature has made us realize what a
truly special human being you are. We admire you and respect you, but above all, we love you. Remember
always that wherever you go or whatever you do, we will always be here for you. You can always count on us
for support and understanding.

No other parents could be prouder of their child than we are of you. Congratulations and Good Luck,

Love, Mom and Dad

Greg:

Take it from one who knows, college is tough but what you get out of it is worth all the study and hard work.

Good Luck!

Love, Ryan

Greggie:

You are the first and only one in the family to receive a diploma wearing the gold tassel of The National

Honor Society. We are very proud!

challenges and give it your most sincere try. Remember we are always near if
you should need us.

We are glad that you have been with us these last few years to watch you
blossom into a free thinking, maturing adult. You will bring the good things in
life to those you love and those who love you.

Congratulations on the conquering of one of your many mile stones. We
hope that those you conquer in the future taste as sweet as this one, this year.
