Dr. Koltuksuz has held many international tutorials and speeches on above topics. He has also supervised numerous masters’ and Ph.D. theses on cryptography, cryptanalysis and open sources intelligence analysis.

Selma Tekir was born in 1979. She got her B.S. Degree from Ege University, Department of Computer Engineering in 2001, and the M.S. Degree in Computer Software from Izmir Institute of Technology Department of Computer Engineering with a thesis of “An Implementation Model for Open Sources Evaluation” in 2004. She has been continuing her doctoral studies at Ege University Department of Computer Engineering since September 2004. She is also employed by Izmir Institute of Technology, College of Engineering, Dept. of Computer Engineering. Her research interests are Information Modeling, Information Assurance, Information Warfare, Intelligence Analysis, and Open Source Intelligence.

OBJECTIVES

To introduce the concepts of intelligence, intelligence analysis, and open source intelligence. To describe the intelligence analysis tools and the available open sources & services. To raise the conciousness in the quality of information and information resources. To provide the attendees with examples of making an OSINT analysis.

RATIONALE

Internet is a very powerful tool to get information. Internet users are not aware of the various open sources & services that are available to them and the usefulness of them in forming the background knowledge providing the context and the effectiveness and efficiency of open source information in decision-making processes. It’s apparent that the open source collection capabilities are not utilized to a necessary and a sufficient extent.

Theoretical Needs

  • Understanding the intelligence process and the concept of open source intelligence.
  • Being aware of the gap between the available information and the actionable intelligence.

Practical Needs

  • Having the knowledge of available open sources & services.
  • Being familiar with the phases of the OSINT process.
  • Adopting the OSINT process for information needs.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?

Decision-makers, analysts, IT professionals will take benefit from this tutorial. Actually every information literate is welcome to participate.

MEETING THE NEEDS

The first session of the tutorial namely Introduction to Intelligence introduces the concept of intelligence and the process by which it’s produced. Succeeding Intelligence Analysis session provides a comparative analysis of it with the information retrieval and give examples of customizable and collaborative analysis tools. Then, in the Open Source Intelligence session OSINT process is explained and an agenda is given for the available open sources & services. A Model OSINT session ends the tutorial by experiencing OSINT phases on an example scenario.
