Church Discipline, Restoration and Reconciliation

(This form is for Rock Church Leadership Use Only)

The Purpose of Church Discipline

“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.  Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:1-2

In the event that Biblical disciplinary actions become necessary and appropriate, it is important to keep in focus that the purpose of church discipline is restoration and reconciliation.  When initiated Biblical discipline is for a person’s spiritual growth through repentance and restorative discipleship.  The church leadership who oversee the rebuilding process needs to invest in the appropriate plan and accountable nurture that aligns best with this goal.

A clear distinction is to be affirmed as to the difference between discipline and punishment.  Discipline is designed to encourage the restoration of the person involved in wrongdoing.  It is to be instructive and corrective with the Biblical goal to engage restorative grace and personal transformation.  Punishment generally focuses on retribution for the wrong done as it seeks primarily to assert justice.

Biblical Foundations for Church Discipline

  • Discipline should move through appropriate steps towards restoration. (Matthew 18:15-20)
  • Sin and disobedience should be taken very seriously as God desires the church to reflect His character and holiness.  (Acts 5:1-11)
  • Unrepentant sin is to be grieved by the church and addressed deliberately. (1 Cor. 5:1-5)
  • When a church leader sins it is to involve appropriate authentication and suitable public rebuke that others may take warning.  (1. Timothy 5:17-22)
  • Church discipline is to be corrective in nature for the purpose of growth. (Hebrews 3:12-13; 12:5-17)

The Practical Process for Rock Staff, Leadership and Congregation

If church discipline is warranted, the following actions will become a part of the restoration process:

  • An identified pastor will oversee the specific restoration process for the individual(s) involved.
  • As part of developing the restoration process and plan, human resources, legal, and/or public relations will be consulted to assess potential risk or liability issues and to assess whether other actions should or must be taken.
  • The pastoral team coordinator will be consulted with in relation to the incident and restoration plan. (The pastoral team coordinator will notify the Executive Leadership Team regarding the person, plan and process.)
  • The persons(s) will be given the opportunity to submit to the restoration plan and process.
  • Documentation of the incident and the restoration plan will be recorded on the attached document and will be placed in Fellowship One.
  • A restoration process will be agreed upon with appropriate boundaries and actions identified for the person in relation to their sin.
  • As part of the restoration plan an accountable leader will be identified to be the point person for follow up growth and transformation.  This leader will report to the overseeing pastor for on-going responsibility regarding the plan for discipline, discipleship and/or counseling.
  • The person will be released from all ministry responsibilities until the pastoral leadership and mentor are in agreement on the time to re-engage ministry. A specific boundary of time will be recommended before ministry involvement is approved.
  • If the Biblical authority of the pastoral leadership and restoration plan is not agreed upon or is refused by the person, then he/she will be given appropriate private and/or public communication that Biblically aligns with the consequences of an unrepentant person.  In accordance with Scripture, this individual will then be prohibited from continued church fellowship.  According to 1. Corinthians 5:1-5 the impenitent person is to be removed from the church’s fellowship or support that he or she might come to repentance through the consequences of separation from the body of Christ. The church body should appropriately mourn this person’s dismissal and should disassociate with the individual.  If the person repents at a later date and seeks restoration (e.g. Prodigal Son), the church should joyfully embrace the person with forgiveness and love as the plan of restoration is re-engaged.

Scripture addresses a number of specific areas of unrepentant sin that may require an accountable discipline process (e.g. immorality, blasphemy, divisiveness, false teaching and unresolved personal conflicts).
